Best time to visit: It it generally hot all year round, but June to August typically sees lesser rainfall.
Padang is the capital and largest city in the Indonesian province of West Sumatra, where majority of the Minangkabau population and culture are rooted.
Think of Padang, and Padang food, which originated from the Minangkabau population, comes to mind. This includes its signature must-try dishes boasting spicy, rich flavours like beef rendang (meat stewed in coconut milk and spices), nasi padang (steamed rice with dishes from the region), dendeng balado (crispy beef with chili), soto padang (a type of beef soup) and more.
Apart from its delicious cuisine, Padang is famed for its folklores such as the story of Siti Nurbaya who was forced to marry a older wealthy merchant as well as the tale of an ungrateful son, Malin Kundang, who was cursed to stone by his mother. A popular local attraction, the Siti Nurbaya Bridge, is a landmark associated with the former and also provides a scenic view of the river. At Pantai Air Manis, visitors can see the large rock formation that represents the stone figure of Malin Kundang.
Visitors should also not miss out the Grand Mosque of West Sumatra, a contemporary example of Minangkabau architecture, Adityawarman Museum, Lembah Anai Waterfall and Old Town, where Dutch colonial-era buildings still mark the area.

Best time to visit Shantou: In spring and autumn for more pleasant weather
Shantou, located in the eastern coast of Guangdong, China, might not be as familiar to many but still has plenty on offer. It’s a gastronomic heaven, tempting foodies with popular dishes such as shang tang ju bao (steamed abalone in thick soup), suancai baishan (boiled white eel with pickled vegetables), hong wen haishen (stewed sea cucumber in sauce), doujiang ju ji (steamed chicken in fermented bean sauce) and jingua yuni (pumpkin with mashed taro).

Admittedly, Sibu is a destination in Sarawak that is under the radar, compared to its more popular East Malaysian counterparks Kuching and Miri.
However, with the launch of flights to Sibu on Scoot from June 2024, the gateway to this underrated city has now expanded, with plenty in store for tourists.
Start with a visit to Sibu Central Market, where you can take home with you some local delicacies, exotic tropical fruits not found anywhere else in Malaysia, and handicraft that is perfect for souvenirs. Next, a trip to Sibu Heritage Centre provides a good overview of Sibu’s culture and diversity.
